Danny Wagner's Blair Monster model

For those of you who suggested Danny should work for Hollywood...well he does! Danny works for Industrial Light and Magic as a model maker, painter, and sculptor. Here's a rundown from Danny himself on how he went about constructing this Blair Monster model.

When I started the Blair Monster maquette these were the basic steps I took:

1. First I figured out what scale I want it. 1/6 or sometimes a little bigger.
2. I designed an armature for my sculpture. The armature for any sculpture I believe is 90% of the sculpture. You use armature wire found in art supply stores or small conduit piping, found at a hard where store.
3. I used wire armature for this maquette. When the armature is shaped to the desired form. I wrapped the thick areas with a little tin foil and white sculpty. I cooked the white sculpty then proceeded applying super sculpty.
4. Sculpting in super sculpty. I knead a little flocking into the sculpty and apply to the maquette. I start building up the layers in organic oval shapes. I use terpinoid and 99% rubbing alcohol to smooth out the forms.
5. Of course reference is important. Lots of frame grabs from the movie. Good pictures of the actor is helpful, in this case Wilford Brimley.
I employed some of my own ideas in the sculpture. Like connecting the mouth of Brimley to the Creatures lips. When the sculpture is all finished I cook the sculpty then plan the paint scheme.
6. I love to use Taymia paints. The line offers a lot of colors and some great clear colors. The clear colors are great for organic basis. For this fleshly bloody creature Taymia is the answer.
7. I airbrushed the basic flesh tones on with several colors and brake it down with sprit zing alcohol on the surface lightly. Then proceed with painting with brushes and drybrush technique. After painting to my hearts content I have a case made to display it.

Danny Wagner built this spectacular Blair Monster model complete with Dog-Thing. This is an amazing piece and I'm sure the model makers for the film back in '82 would have been as equally impressed with Danny's work and hired him on the spot. Fantastic!!
