THE THING - How I became such a huge fan

The 1982 cult classic sci-fi/horror film THE THING has always been my all-time favorite. I first saw it at the impressionable age of 10 on a scorching hot day in the summer of 1984. I watched it as a home video rental in my uncle’s basement. Knowing his nephew was into horror films my Uncle Tom had invited little Todd over to see THE THING.
The movie traumatized me beyond fear. I was completely terrified. I remember my Mom picking me up from my Uncle's and I was paralyzed. When we got home she kept asking what in the world had I seen over at Uncle Tom's place??? After that I was forbidden to go see movies there anymore. However a few months later my Uncle knew how much I was enthralled with this movie (I never shut up about it) and he made me a video tape copy.
The years went by and my fear turned to fascination, I eventually found other fans online who loved this film just as much as myself. In October 2001 I founded Outpost #31 - The Ultimate THE THING Fan-Site and that year was also the first THING-FEST Weekend, a 35mm screening of the film which we have done every year since.
